Demographic features and causes of death due to poisoning in vulnerable group of Golestan province during 2010-2016

Background and Objectives: Death caused by poisoning is one of the serious health problems in the world. this study aimed to survey of demographic features and causes of death due to poisoning among vulnerable groups in Golestan province.
Materials and Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out on 174 cases in vulnerable groups (children, adolescents, women of reproductive ages and the elders) who had died due to poisoning and were taken to Golestan department of forensic medicine from March 2010 to March 2016. Data were collected from cases’ files and analyzed using SPSS 16 software.
Results: 174 cases, 71.8% were women (n=125) and most of them belonged to the women of reproductive age groups (n=92, 52.9) intentional poisoning in the form of suicidal attempts was identified as the main cause of poisoning death (n=118, 67.8%). Also, aluminium phosphide (n=69, 39.7%) was the most common cause of death among women of reproductive ages (n=40, 58%) and adolescents (n=25, 2/36%).
Conclusion: Intentional poisoning in the form of suicidal attempt was identified as the main cause of poisoning death among vulnerable groups especially women of reproductive age in Golestan province. |
