Background and Objectives: Considering the geographical location and incident of our country, the role of nurses, as the most populous group among medical staff, in critical conditions is very important. In this regard, the present study was conducted to determine the level of knowledge, readiness and performance of nursing students of Tabriz Nursing and Midwifery Faculty in dealing with unexpected events.
Materials and Methods: In a descriptive observational study in 1395, through using simple sampling, level of knowledge, readiness and performance of 41 students of Nursing and Midwifery faculty were assessed by using a questionnaire (including three individual sections, level of knowledge and preparation) and a performance checklist. Validity of these questionnaires and checklist was verified by content validity and retest reliability. Data were analyzed by descriptive and inferential statistics in SPSS version 16.
Results: The mean and standard deviation of knowledge and preparation of students were 21.85±2.51 and 609.78±91.90 respectively, indicating moderate knowledge (51%) and good preparation (60%) for pre-hospital triage students. The mean and standard deviation of the triage period was 11.24±3.86 minutes and the Frequency and percentage of correct triage was (49.53) and incorrect triage was (511.41) 211 (including high triage (46.21) 46 and low triage (24/40) 165. In the field of pre-hospital triage function, participants had poor performance (nearly 52% of the students).
Conclusion: Participants had moderate and good readiness for pre-hospital triage, but their performance was poor and unfavorable in dealing with unexpected events. Therefore, crisis management nursing courses with emphasis on new and practical training such as simulations is suggested.
